TL-WR700N 150Mbps Wireless N Mini Pocket Router

This past Thursday I got my demo units of the TP-LINK TL-WR700N 150Mbps Wireless N Mini Pocket Router. This low cost – alternative to the likes of the Apple AirPort Express – is simply a wireless router. Unlike the AirPort Express, it doesn’t feature an audio port for speakers, and doesn’t have a USB port to share a printer… so you would expect that it would be less than the AirPort Express… oh it is. It comes in at an estimated MSRP of $40, however you can find it online from reputable retailers for around $30.

TL WR700N 03~I’m excited about these inexpensive mini WiFi routers. I ordered two to test, because the school doesn’t have WiFi throughout the building… and we are slowly adding more and more “WiFi zones”. When all you need is a (small user base) WiFi AP, it’s hard to justify $100 for an Apple AirPort Express, when a ~$30 unit can be had from TP-LINK that can do exactly what you need it to do.

The first impression can be “it looks cheap”, and who knows how long it will last – it may fizzle out after one month – I don’t know… The web-based settings/UI is “okay”, but it’s nothing to right home about — compared to the ease of use with the Apple AirPort Utility, it’s pretty sad.

It took me a few tries to get it setup the way I wanted. It used termanology that can be used in multiple ways, and I was mistaking it for one section, when I should have been in another. Anyway, it wasn’t long before I figured it out and got it working.

Overall, I’m impressed with the device, the setup, and the included instructions. I’ll be testing them more before selling the two I got to two individuals who want them for their classrooms.

As of right now, I can’t fully recommend them. I want to test them further before giving them the seal of my approval. The Apple AirPort Express will always be a great solution that offers added value in the way of added functionality, and ease of use for just a little more cost.

1st Gen iPad and a 2nd Gen Apple TV

The other night my Mom asked me if it was possible to show pictures that are on her iPad on the living room TV. She has a 1st generation iPad, and I know that with the 2nd Generation Apple TV it’s possible to do some airplay style streaming to the Apple TV. I tested it out first using just the photos app because I knew that the 1st gen iPad doesn’t support full mirroring like the iPad 2 does.

It worked for the most part, however it would have been much easier if her iPad supported full mirroring… because she had a number of sites open in Safari, and was switching between pages, trying to show my Dad different images of photo prints.

Sure I offered to show it on my iPad 2, however, we decided that transferring the multiple addresses that she had open in Safari, as well as logging in to the sites to retrieve the gallery of prints she had saved – would take too long. :(

What, another “food” post? Facepalm!

Tonight I wanted something special for dinner… Knowing that I didn’t have all the ingredients I made sure a stop at the supermarket was in order. I knew what I wanted, and I wasn’t going to be persuaded to choose something else. What I wanted was a super sized taco salad!

I got the lettuce salad mix, taco flavored Doritos (later to be crushed), and chili – my favorite: Hormel Chili with Beans (Homer drool)… which would be topped with cheese that I had left over from a trip to the store days before.

I enjoyed the salad while watching a rerun of Law and Order – while waiting for a rerun of NCIS to start. The only thing that I forgot was the sour cream.

Good times. :)

What’s for dinner?

My Aunt and Uncle discovered a cool new restaurant in our area, it’s the Hibachi Grill Preview this short URL an Asian, Chinese, Japanese buffet and bar. In addition to the delicious buffet foods, they have a sushi area, as well as a section where you can pick something and a chef will cook it special to your order. The times I’ve been there, I’ve always opted to stay with just the buffet. Compared to other “china buffet style” restaurants, The Hibachi Gill is by far my favorite. I must say though, it’s better to come super hungry, and make the most out of the buffet, otherwise it’s pretty expensive.

Duplex Brother Printing: Pooched (after update)

So, I updated all the needed software in the Mac Lab yesterday, and one of the updates was the “Brother Printer Drivers 2.8 Preview this short URL” supplied by Apple via Software Update.

I went to print something – double sided (to save paper), and it acted like it was printing duplex: the Brother models that we have, print the page, then suck it back in to print on the other side. Unfortunately it was “just acting” like it was printing, because it would print out page two on it’s own page.

Since I print duplex all the time, and ask that the students do the same when ever possible, this was a major issue that needed to be fixed.

First I called Apple and got transferred a few times so that I finally reached the right department. The technician told me that: Brother provides the drivers directly to Apple. Apple then takes the drivers, bundles them and offers them via Software Update. He informed me that Apple couldn’t “roll back” the drivers, so in the end, I would have to contact Brother about the issue.

I went to Brother’s website to find a phone number. After a few transfers, it was an obvious mistake on my part. The person – likely in India – just couldn’t understand my request: “UPDATE your drivers and send them to Apple!!! So that we can continue to print duplex!!!” They thought I was having problems, and that they wanted to walk me through setting up the printer again. Oh for heaven’s sake. I hung up.

Only the computer gods know why I waited so long… but I finally reached out, and googled the issue. Would you look at that? Multiple top hits about the Brother v2.8 update. Go figure right? I should have just done that first. Anyway, people were saying that Brother posted an updated driver that fixes the issue – but that driver was only posted on Brother’s website.

Sure enough I searched for the various models we have here at the school, and they all reported the same (updated) driver, and the latest version notes listed:

Corrects the issue of being unable to do 2-sided (duplex) print. (Only for machines supporting 2-sided (duplex) print)

Brother shot

What’s even more problematic is that Apple posted the Brother Drivers on 12/13, Brother had a patched version on 12/20… yet they (Brother) haven’t yet sent the drivers to Apple to update the 2.8 drivers to fix the issue. Granted they may have submitted them to Apple and Apple hasn’t yet posted them… however I’m going to go with blaming Brother on this. The support people I talked to knew nothing about the issue – yet it was clearly stated on the specific driver pages that it was an issue that was fixed.

Bad form Brother, bad form.

“Light Bulb” Moment: Mac mini Server RAM Upgrade

Back on 2011/11/21 I wrote:

Prays to the computer gods…

Oy Vey! Like today couldn’t get any worse.

I re-enable file-sharing on my Mac Lion Server (was doing some HD work so I turned it off)… and then students told me that they couldn’t connect. So I checked, FS was on, and the shares were there… but wait they look wrong. So I try to fix them, they are pooched. Okay something strange is going on – restart. ¡Jasquita! this is going bad. Restart. No Joy. Restart, what 10.6.8? Good grief. Restart… Try to log into the Lion Recovery partition – after 7 reboots, I’m finally able to connect. I’m praying to the computer gods that the time machine backup will be successful. I swear if this works I’ll upgrade the server’s RAM to 8GB! – Permalink

I finally get around to ordering the 8GB of RAM – as promised for things working out… and then it hits me… Wait a tick, we have a few sticks left. Sure enough, the RAM was the exact same RAM that I had in my shopping cart! Instant (and already paid for) Upgrade! It’s a weight off my shoulders knowing that there is more RAM in our Mac server. :D

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2012! I’m going to try and pick up Post-A-Day again. I made it pretty far (IMHO) in 2011; so hopefully I’ll make it further this year. ;) More to come hopefully.

I can finally check an OFFICIAL Xbox LIVE app on my iPhone or iPad to see if any of my friends are online (LIVE) and what they are playing. No longer do I need to quickly boot up my 360 just to check who’s online. * Sure I could check the website, but an app is so much faster.
