An Error Omen

Error message copy

Huh? What’s This? I wasn’t downloading or buying anything, just browsing…

Last night I was in troubleshooting mode. My iPad was unable to download apps from the App store (that included new apps and updates to already installed apps). This was very perplexing as it would take at least a few minuets before timing out. At first I thought it was my connection, but that didn’t make sense because I could connect to and browse the App Store.

First I tried a different internet connection – no joy. Power cycling? Force restart? Sign out of the App Store? Sign out of auto install via Store option in Settings? All no go!

I had to think outside of the box. Reset All Settings? That produced some strange results, and I wasn’t really sure if that did the trick. So no. I was pretty sure that I would have to do a restore, so I tried: Erase All Content and Settings. Eureka!

Wanting to make sure that I got this nasty bug taken care of, I decide to do a full OS restore and revert from a backup. I mean really, I was going to restore from the backup anyway, so why right?

After a very slow download of iOS 5.1, I restored the iPad, and then waited for the lengthy sync to get my settings, and content back. I’m happy to report things are a-okay as of this morning.

What’s very strange is that all of this drama was preceded by a repeating error message. Periodically an error message like that pictured above, would just show up. What was really strange is that it would show an app name that I hadn’t updated or installed in a while.

What’s even stranger yet, is that I never captured a screen shot of the error on the iPad… The picture above is from my iPhone!!! Is that an error omen? Should I be worried that the same issue will affect my iPhone? I’ve yet to see that come up within the last day or two on my iPhone, so I really don’t know. I suspect some bit got flipped resulting in failed app downloading and installing of apps.

Custom Mexican Train Dominoes Score Card w/Player Rank

20120305-040241.jpg

After playing a few rounds of Mexican Train Dominoes we decided to start keeping score. At the time, I had a score pad, but it was for Double 12′s – even though we are playing with #15. Anyway, after a while everyone wanted to know where they ranked. Not wanting to have to add up 8 rows of scores each round (we are playing one round a day), I turned to a spreadsheet (Apple’s Numbers for iPad).

After setting up the sheet, having average scores and totals wasn’t enough… I wanted it to auto rank the players. Thanks to the user-friendly Numbers app, I was able to auto generate player rank!

As you can see from the picture above, the sheet has player names at the top (generic names for this post) which are mirrored at the bottom; average scores, total scores, and w/Mexican Train – the lower the score the better: a rank system.

The sheet is easily customizable for the number of players, and rounds. It can easily accommodate 16 players with #18 (19 rounds) or more. :D

[My Review] Poor quality control at Cardinal Industries…

I was looking to purchase a new set of dominoes that I could leave at work… so I started searching. I ended up purchasing the following from Amazon: Cardinal Industries Double Fifteen Color Dot Dominoes in a Collectors Tin Preview this short URL

Mexican Train

Here’s my review…

Durability:  3-Stars  |  Fun:  5-Stars  |  Overall:  1-Stars

I made sure to purchase this set of Double 15 colored pip dominoes because they are produced by Cardinal Industries – the company that made my double-9 and double-12 sets that my family purchased in the mid-90′s.

Let me start out with my major complaint:

Cardinal Industries’ quality control is now in the toilet. I know the double-9 and double-12 sets purchased in the mid-90′s were much more expensive and of a higher quality… seeing this double-15 set for such a low price ($15) made me leery.

Even with reviews posted [..] on Amazon, of paint defects and easily identifiable defects – I still purchased this set… I fully expected some of the dominoes to have issues. However, I’m disappointed at the level of damage, paint chips, and over all paint contamination causing many to be easily identifiable.

Side note: I’ve uploaded a number of photos to this product to show some “issues” you may run into:

Make sure you get what you purchased! Do not “assume” that all the *RIGHT* dominoes are there. Lay them out, put them in order, and verify that every one is there. Having an incomplete/incorrect set will cause confusion in the middle of your favorite intense game of dominoes. Note: My set was complete.

My set arrived in a tin, though it wasn’t damaged, it is a metal tin – and we all know they can be easily dented, etc. Take care – if yours arrived in great condition.

The “train” hub that was included in my set (see the pictures I uploaded) is adequate, no frills. It is smaller than other ones I have, and I actually prefer that.

My set only came with 4 – yes four – train markers. Hello Cardinal, the train hub provided for – say Mexican Train – plays up to 8, plus the public train… you need to provide at minimum 9 markers! Four is not enough. In my opinion, if they didn’t want to include a full set, they shouldn’t have included them at all.

If you want a stand alone (more robust) train hub (with frills) and 9 markers, look at this product: Mexican Train And Chickenfoot Game Centerpiece Kit | Amazon Preview this short URL

Let’s face it, this is a set of dominoes, and there are various types of games you can play with them… thus the 5/5 for “how fun is this toy”. I’m giving a 3/5 for durability – after one day some paint is already coming off – just from shuffling the dominoes!

Overall I have to give it a 1/5. I’m disappointed by the quality control coming from Cardinal Industries, the paint issues and contamination is just too much – even for the price.

** One last thing… Upon opening the dominoes (they come shrink wrapped in the tin), a very intense chemical odor emanated from the set. The smell persists, days later. Played a game with five others, and they all noticed it. Nauseating really. :/

** Update: I’ve noticed that some tiles are actually thinner than others – by a noticeable amount. This is just another nail in the coffin that is Cardinal Industries Double Fifteen Color Dot Dominoes.
