Huh? What’s This? I wasn’t downloading or buying anything, just browsing…
Last night I was in troubleshooting mode. My iPad was unable to download apps from the App store (that included new apps and updates to already installed apps). This was very perplexing as it would take at least a few minuets before timing out. At first I thought it was my connection, but that didn’t make sense because I could connect to and browse the App Store.
First I tried a different internet connection – no joy. Power cycling? Force restart? Sign out of the App Store? Sign out of auto install via Store option in Settings? All no go!
I had to think outside of the box. Reset All Settings? That produced some strange results, and I wasn’t really sure if that did the trick. So no. I was pretty sure that I would have to do a restore, so I tried: Erase All Content and Settings. Eureka!
Wanting to make sure that I got this nasty bug taken care of, I decide to do a full OS restore and revert from a backup. I mean really, I was going to restore from the backup anyway, so why right?
After a very slow download of iOS 5.1, I restored the iPad, and then waited for the lengthy sync to get my settings, and content back. I’m happy to report things are a-okay as of this morning.
What’s very strange is that all of this drama was preceded by a repeating error message. Periodically an error message like that pictured above, would just show up. What was really strange is that it would show an app name that I hadn’t updated or installed in a while.
What’s even stranger yet, is that I never captured a screen shot of the error on the iPad… The picture above is from my iPhone!!! Is that an error omen? Should I be worried that the same issue will affect my iPhone? I’ve yet to see that come up within the last day or two on my iPhone, so I really don’t know. I suspect some bit got flipped resulting in failed app downloading and installing of apps.
